MHM 2022 - PTSD and sexual assault

When people think of PTSD, they often think of soldiers and fireworks. But sexual assault is a way more common cause of PTSD. It is estimated that around 50% of people who experience sexual assault develop PTSD, compared to only around 6-7% of military personnel/veterans.

People who have experienced trauma, especially sexual trauma, may not want to come forward about their abuse. They may feel humiliated, shameful, or guilty. This fear can lead to re-experiencing their trauma, changing your behavior to avoid scenarios associated with the event, and hyper-arousal or always feeling “on edge.”

One of the biggest things you can do to help someone who may be experiencing PTSD is to LISTEN. Do not judge, do not interject your own opinions, do not dismiss their feelings, do not give advice. Encourage professional help, but allow them to process at their own pace. There is treatment and there is hope.
