#shawleveryday2019 Day 67
Women and girls experience mental illness differently than men and boys. The following mental illnesses are more common in women than men, and women are more likely to experience comorbidity.
depression
anxiety
phobias
OCD
PTSD
dementia
eating disorders
There are also mental illnesses that are specific to women:
pre-menstrual dsyphoric disorder
post-partum depression
peri-menopause depression
Women are more likely to have suicidal thoughts and attempt suicides, but are less likely to die by suicide. Many people believe that women attempting suicide is just a method to gain attention, but that is not true. A failed suicide attempt in women is a strong indicator that they may attempt again in the future.
Today, I encourage you to reach out to female friend and check in on how they're doing. We must support each other and reduce the stigma around talking about mental illness.
