I start most of my designs on graph paper, either plain squares for quilting or special knitting graph paper (knitting stitches aren't square!).

Once we have it sketched up in pencil, I'll either go over it in pen or take it straight to Excel or Google Sheets. I use the border and fill tools to finalize my design and make it neat.

From there, I can cut/paste into Word or Google Docs to fit in along with the words. I like to keep my old sketches because it's near to see how the design progresses from early idea to finished product.
