MHM 2022 - Asking for Help
If you feel like you are having a hard time managing your mental health on your own, it may be time to ask for help. You might feel like it’s a sign of weakness, that you can’t do it by yourself, but you don’t have to do it alone. Asking for help is a strong thing to do - it means that you are taking control of the problem and your life.
The first step is to talk to someone you can trust, whether that is a friend, family member, or even a crisis line. It’s important that you feel safe and that the person will support you and not dismiss your feelings. Your feelings are valid and you are not being a burden to others if you ask for help.
It can be as simple as “Hey friend, I’ve been struggling with my mental health lately, and I think I might need some help.” or “Hey friend, do you have a minute? It’s important to me.” Do not minimize your feelings by leading with things like “I hate to ask” or “Sorry to bother you.” Feel free to practice in front of a mirror or to a pet or even write down what you want to say.
It may take a few tries to get up the courage and it may seem like some people just aren’t listening, but don’t give up. You deserve to get the help you need and it can get better.
If you are having thoughts of suicide, please call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or text HOME to 741741 to connect with a Crisis Counselor.
