MHM 2022 - Therapy basics
Therapy is a great tool for your mental health and there are a lot of reasons people go to therapy. For example, processing difficult experiences, working through relationship issues, learning healthy coping skills, being able to speak to a neutral person, None of those reasons mean you are “crazy” or “broken”.
Going to therapy also doesn’t mean you are in it forever. Maybe you only need a few sessions to go through a tough situation. Maybe you need it for a few months to build up your self-acceptance. You can also go to therapy for a while, take a break while you are doing well, and go back. There is no right or wrong path for therapy.
My favorite parts of therapy are when my therapist gets me to realize the answer to my own question. She helps me see the problem in a different way and guides me towards a solution. I’ll harrumph and go “well, fine!” knowing full well that I wouldn’t have been able to figure out without her.
