#shawleveryday2019 Day 5
Bipolar disorder is the 3rd most common mental illness in the US, however it is often misunderstood. Many people think that people who switch very quickly (within minutes) from one extreme mood to the other have bipolar disorder, but that is not the case. Typically an extreme mood (whether depression or mania) lasts weeks or even months.
There are 2 types of bipolar disorder: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is the more well known version, which used to be called manic-depression. This type is characterized by more extreme highs (mania) and relatively equal amounts of mania and depression. People with bipolar type 2 typically have more depressive episodes and only experience mild mania (hypomania) rather than the extreme mania that type 1 can experience.
