MMtM 2020 Day 7: Me!
Loops of Gray is a one-woman show with the occasional help from my husband and mother-in-law. I am based out of St. Louis, MO and my full-time job is in IT.
MMtM 2020 Day 5: Closeup
Just one of over 70 medallions in this shawl, each with over 70 stitches. Amazing how each small stitch adds up to a beautiful finished item.
MMtM 2020 Day 4: Branding
When designing my logo, I incorporated aspects of both knitting (the yarn) and quilting (the pebble design), which are my main 2 focuses for my making. Both crafts use loops of various sorts, which is where that part of the name came from.
MMtM 2020 Day 3: Time
People often ask how I have the time to make so many things. The simple answer is that I don't! I can only dream of having enough time to make half of the projects on my radar.
March Meet the Maker 2020 Day 1: My Story
I learned to knit when I was 12, about 23 years ago, using an old illustrated book from my grandma's house, and have basically never stopped since then. I also crochet, sew, quilt, do 3D printing, and a little bit of a lot of other things. This picture showcases several of my crafts, including 3D printing the base for a UFO abduction lamp.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 95
I have several tattoos, but the one that is the most important to me isn't really even mine.
Project Semicolon promotes the semicolon tattoo as a way to present hope and love to those who are struggling with mental illness, suicide, addiction, and self-injury. In writing, a semicolon is used when an author could have chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 94
I've got one more shawl/post to do, but first I'd like to do a little wrap-up of my #shawleveryday2019 project. When I started out, I had no idea if I could write about mental health every day for 90+ days, but I did it. I learned a ton of things and I'm so glad that I got to share all this information with you. I hope you were able to gain some knowledge and reflect on your own mental health along the way.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 93
As you can tell, I like to knit a lot. I have over 260 projects cataloged in Ravelry and there are many more that I didn't even bother to document or that I knit before Ravelry even existed. I've been knitting for over 20 years and have no plans to stop.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 92
People with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) display some or all of the following symptoms:
#shawleveryday2019 Day 90
I am almost done with #shawleveryday2019 and I want to remind you that I am doing a fundraiser for Independence Center, which is a fantastic community-based rehabilitation program for adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses in the St. Louis area, built on the Clubhouse model of psychosocial rehabilitation. I am only 1/3 of the way to my goal and all the funds go directly to them.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 89
Today is #WorldBipolarDay so I would like to share with you a post from my husband Brian. He has bipolar disorder type 2 and this is his experience in his own words.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 88
Today I want to give a shoutout to artist Shawn Coss. As part of a monthly challenge called Inktober, he illustrated a series of mental illnesses, resulting in #inktoberillness. His dark style definitely captures the often intense feelings of mental illness.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 87
In Japan and around the world, an extreme form of social withdrawal called hikikomori is becoming a mainstream problem. Hikikomori is defined as people who have not left their homes or interacted with others for at least 6 months. It affects both men and women and typically people ages 15 to 30, although there is growing concern that hikikomori continues to affect people as they get older.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 86
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder than can occur in both children and adults and is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. People with ADHD struggle with working memory, flexible thinking, managing emotions, self-regulation, and organization and planning. ADHD is not a lack of willpower to pay attention, the brain itself has a hard time shifting focus from one thing to another.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 84
Many people experience both mental illness and addiction. People with a mental health condition are twice as likely to suffer from a substance use disorder, and people who abuse alcohol or other drugs are more likely to to have a co-occurring mental illness. The two conditions are definitely linked, but one does not necessarily cause the other.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 83
Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in your community. It gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 81
People in the LGBT+ community are 3 times more likely to experience a mental health condition than straight people. Even more seriously, LGBT+ youth are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide and self harm.
#shawleveryday2019 Day 80
Today I want to give a quick shoutout to comic artist Ruby Etc. Her comics are fun and silly and showcase human foibles, mental health, and a variety of whimsical things.
