Post-partum depression
I'm not a mother, nor do I plan to be one, so I always feel unqualified to talk about postpartum depression. But I do my best to read the research from reputable sources to gather as much information as I can. In case someone were to reach out to me, I want to be able to understand what they might be going through and be able to point them in a good direction.
Self care isn’t selfish
Self care isn't selfish!
Especially now, it's incredibly important to take care of yourself. There's a lot going on and it can be easy to forget that you matter too.
Therapy is for everyone
Therapy is the best. It really is. I know there's still a lot of stigma about going to therapy. That it means you're broken, that it means you're doing it wrong, that it means you don't have your shit together. Well, heads up, therapy is for everyone.
Derealization
Derealization has been hitting me hard today. It's such a weird feeling that's hard to describe. It's like I'm watching a movie, but I'm also part of it and it's also physically unsettling.
NAMI Walk 2020
On May 30th, I will be participating in NAMI St. Louis 's virtual NAMI Walk. This year, it's time to get creative! You can walk a 5K - through your neighborhood, around your backyard, on your treadmill. Or you can do something else meaningful and fun to celebrate the virtual walk day.
Dermatillomania
I've written before about how I likely have some form of dermatillomania (skin picking), which is related to OCD and anxiety. It gets worse during times of stress, so it's no surprise that I'm having a flare up right now.
Carrie Fisher
For Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you!), I'd like to talk a little bit about Carrie Fisher. She was very open about her bipolar diagnosis and she helped paved the way for celebrities to be open about their mental health concerns.
Mental health resources
Over the years, I have put together a massive list of mental health resources, from addiction to self harm, from finding a therapist to hockey players talking about their mental health. If there's anything you need, I've gathered it on my website. If there's any topics you think I've missed or you have been wondering about, please let me know. Feel free to share with anyone who might need some assistance and doesn't know where to go.
You are not alone
It is estimated that 1 in 5 adults in the US experience mental health concerns. It may feel like no one understands what you are going through, but there are people out there (including me!) who totally get it. By being open about what you are struggling with, it can help you find other people who are experiencing the same thing. Finding someone who knows what you're talking about is incredibly connecting and encouraging.
Mental Health Awareness Month 2020
May is #mentalhealthawarenessmonth so I'll be posting some information every day related to #mentalhealth.
This year's theme is You Are Not Alone.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 30: 2nd Shift Brewing
2nd Shift Brewing has such a wonderful place in my heart. Not only do they make delicious beer (shout out to Katy, my favorite!), but they have hosted countless pop-up events where I have sold my shawls. They have also begun hosting events to get the brewing industry in St. Louis talking about mental health, which is even more important now than ever.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 29: Yoga for Healing
Yoga for Healing St. Louis is a trauma-sensitive yoga class started by my sister-in-law Julie in order to support healing. She began the practice as a way to help survivors of sexual and domestic violence. However, it is profoundly clear that we are all experiencing a collective trauma, so she has started posting her classes on YouTube so that anyone can participate. If you are feeling overwhelmed or scared or worried, take some time for self care and do some yoga with Julie. You are safe and you are loved.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 28: STL-Style
STL-Style is an absolute city treasure. Their designs beautifully capture what we love about St. Louis and all its quirks. From Ferguson to South City to Clayton to the East Side, they have you covered.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 27: Bridge Bread
We have sung the praises of Bridge Bread before, but it bears repeating how great of an organization it is. They provide supportive employment to people without safe and stable housing plus their cinnamon rolls are the best in St. Louis.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 26: Crow’s Nest
The Crow's Nest in Maplewood is one of our favorite dive bars/restaurants. Their drinks have wonderful puns, they always have a weird movie projected next to the bar, and their signature Heavy Metal Brunch is just the best.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 25: Unstitched Embroidery
Unstitched Embroidery creates beautiful, fun, and sometimes cheeky hand embroidered art. I have several of her pieces, but my favorite is the one I commissioned for my husband of Tucker's Law (Google at your own risk). Her work is also hilariously feminist and she donates 10% of all sales to Planned Parenthood. I highly recommend her uterus works, Bob's Burgers pieces, and of course, custom commissions.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 24: Amsterdam Tavern
Amsterdam Tavern on Morganford is primarily a soccer bar, but in June 2019, all eyes were on hockey.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 23: Venice Cafe
My husband Brian and I will always have a soft spot in our hearts for Venice Cafe St. Louis. We went to an open mic night hosted by Miles Long and Ellen the Felon (who has since dropped the "Felon") and had our first kiss on the absolutely incredible patio.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 22: Four Muddy Paws
Four Muddy Paws is our go-to pet store. We originally started going there because of their self-service dog washing stations, but we now get all our stuff there from pet food to treats to collars and toys. They are highly focused on pet nutrition and being a community hub for everything pet-related. They are currently offering curbside pickup, which we have already taken advantage of! We highly recommend them as a local alternative to big-box pet stores.
Shawl Every Day 2020 Day 21: Jam and Bee Ceramics
Jam and Bee Ceramics makes some of the cutest stuff around. What caught my eye was a kitty planter, which I repurposed into a pen/pencil/scissors holder for my desk. They feature lots of adorable animals, spooky skulls, and a little bit of profanity. They are adding new stuff daily, so I'm sure you'll find something that would the perfect gift for anyone on your list.
